19th – 25th June 2017

Bedford is a town of migration. We have a long and proud tradition of welcoming new communities seeking new lives – some people have arrived seeking work and better opportunities, some people have fled war or persecution. The Higgins Bedford is working with local asylum seeker, refugee and migrant communities to ensure that the museum celebrates all our histories and culture.

The theme of Refugee Week 2017 is Different Pasts, Shared Future. We will be displaying a newly created tapestry that uses photographs of objects which asylum seekers, refugees and other migrants have brought with them from their lands of origin alongside maps of their journeys as source material.

Artist Josepa Munoz has lead a group of local people to create the tapestry that includes stories from Syria, Somalia, Zimbabwe, Palestine, Hungary, Poland, Kenya, The Gambia, Croatia, Ireland, India and Spain. This work will form part of the museum’s permanent collection to reflect on and celebrate the rich diversity of our local community. We hope it will be added to in future years as we continue to welcome new communities to Bedford.

We will be launching a series of films and audio recordings of local asylum seekers, refugees and other migrants talking about their journeys to Bedford; their lives since arrival and the objects they have brought with them from their countries of origin. These films and recordings will form part of our permanent collection and will continue to be added to, as our communities evolve and grow.
