1.00pm Art in Words and Objects in Fashion

Fashion Show with garments designed and made by Hazel Muza

 

1.05pm Singing and Music

19 year old RCM Mezzo-Soprano students, Luisa Baker & Anna Munoz will sing ‘Le Montagnard Exile’ by Berlioz.  This song is based on the Montagnards; a tribal people found in Southeast Asia with an ancient and unique culture. Following the Vietnam War, many emigrated to the USA.

 

1.10pm Welcome, Introduction and Opening Speeches

 

1.20pm ‘Distant Voices’ by Wixams Academy Year 7 Students

Play created and performed by Year 7 students at Wixams Academy explores the difficulties and prejudices faced by refugees as they leave their homes and embark on their difficult journey to safety. Set against the backdrop of the Hungarian revolution and using the story of Gabrielle’s flight, her handbag and her teddy as a stimulus, this work seeks to provoke an emotional response to our own understanding of the plight of refugees worldwide.

 

1.50pm Viewing exhibition, and Booth

A chance to view videos of collected refugee stories and record your own experience or good wishes for a Shared Future.

 

2.00pm Art Workshop

To mark the 20th anniversary of Refugee Week have a go at writing a 20 word, or 20 line poem using words collected during Voices: Different Pasts, Shared Future workshops.

 

2.30pm Refugee Host Isha N’jie will read ‘My Mother’s Heels’ by Yousif M. Qasmiyeh.

Yousif M. Qasmiyeh is a Palestinian poet and translator based in Oxford. His poems and translations have appeared in Arabic. https://refugeehosts.org

 

2.35pm Friends of Refugees

Music performance with lyrics created by residents at Yarl’s Wood Immigration Centre – Commissioned by Bedford Music in Detention. Choir led by Johanne Hudson-Lett.

 

2.45pm  Language Workshop

Learn 20 words in a new language!

 

3.00pm Food Glorious Food

Enjoy food from multiple countries including; Syria, India, Jamaica, Kenya and Zimbabwe

 

4.15pm Viewing exhibition, and Booth

View the stories of refugees, asylum seekers and migrants and record your own experience or good wishes for a Shared Future.

Bedford Music in Detention

Musician: Roshi Nasehi, in collaboration with King’s Arms Project- Bedford Creative Arts, funded by Harpur Trust.

 

4.35pm Art Workshop

5.00pm Spoken Word Performance

A poetry performance by Francis and Alvin
