Voices - Different Pasts, Shared Future - on tour

Bedford is a town of migration. We have a long and proud tradition of welcoming new communities seeking new lives. Some people have arrived seeking work and better opportunities; others have fled war or persecution.

The Higgins Bedford has worked closely with local asylum seeker, refugee and migrant communities to create a display of tapestries using photographs of objects which people have brought with them from their lands of origin including Syria, Palestine, Somalia, Zimbabwe, Croatia and Hungary. Volunteers from Bedfordshire Refugee and Asylum Seeker Support, The Higgins Bedford and women detained at Yarl’s Wood Immigration Removal Centre helped stitch the tapestries. The museum has also collected the stories of refugees, asylum seekers and migrants which are on audio recordings and in a film.

During 2018 The Higgins Bedford will be touring the display with the tapestries and oral histories around the town. We will be in local in community centres, libraries, schools, colleges, places of worship and other venues and we will doing activity to engage local people with the display. To find out more, please contact pauline.stepney@bedford.gov.uk or josepa.munoz@bedford.gov.uk or ring 01234 276365.
