Bill Lay

Do you live in Bedford?

I do, in the Brickhill area

How long have you been volunteering at The Higgins Bedford?

I have been volunteering at The Higgins Bedford since the reopening in 2013. I saw adverts and information when I visited the galleries and decided to get in touch to see what I could offer.

How many hours a week do you volunteer at The Higgins Bedford?

Normally around three hours.

Do you volunteer anywhere else?

I am co-ordinate a team of volunteers at The Place Theatre Bedford where I am a member of an active amateur dramatics group.

What do you do at The Higgins Bedford?

Generally I work as a Gallery Interpreter – I meet and greet people arriving in the galleries and answer any questions that they might have. I also run guided tours.

Why did you decide to volunteer at The Higgins Bedford?

I previously volunteered at a museum in Newark and found the experience very rewarding so I decided to give it another go.

What do you like about volunteering?

My favourite thing about volunteering at The Higgins Bedford is meeting new people from the community and talking to them about our fantastic exhibits and artefacts.

What do you do while you are not volunteering?

I am now retired from a long career of teaching English and French, so when I am not volunteering I enjoy art, theatre, and most importantly being a grandparent!
